Workshop on ‘Writing in the Age of ChatGPT’ Organized at BIL, Brac University
A workshop titled ‘Writing Instructions in the Age of ChatGPT’ was organized for the faculty members of Brac Institute of Languages (BIL), Brac University on 20 July, 2023 (Thursday) from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm by Ms. Amelia Marsteller and Ms. Farina Haque at room number UB21203. Ms. Amelia focused on different writing styles with the help of two books, ‘The Great Derangement’ by Amitab Ghosh and ‘Laudato si’ by Pope Francis which was followed by an open discussion. Ms. Farina facilitated a brief discussion session on detecting Artificial Intelligence (AI) produced write-ups with the help of different writing samples. All faculty members of BIL attended the workshop.
Book Drive Project HERALD for Primary School Students
Brac Institute of Languages (BIL) faculty members Mohammad Aminul Islam and Md Mahbubul Islam distributed 200 books among the students of Arambaria Government Primary School, Ishwardi, Pabna in collaboration with Brac University Community Service Club (BUCSC). On August 13, 2023, a local representative of the Harnessing Emerging Readers for Attainment and Language Development (HERALD) team handed over those books to the headmaster of the school. HERALD is BIL’s book drive project which collects preowned books on a voluntary basis and distributes those among outreach libraries, schools and clubs.

BIL Signed an MoU with Obstetricians and Gynecologists Society of Bangladesh (OGSB) Institute of Nursing Science
BRAC Institute of Language (BIL) has signed an MoU with “Obstetricians and Gynecologists Society of Bangladesh (OGSB) Institute of Nursing Science” to conduct a thirty-hour-long “English training for Nursing students” course. The focus of the course is to develop language skills with particular emphasis on health science vocabularies and language expressions. Forty students are currently continuing the training which is expected to end in mid-September.

BIL Lecturer Wins Prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship
Brac University is proud to announce that Ms. Farjana Afrin, a dedicated lecturer at the Brac Institute of Languages (BIL), has been awarded the prestigious Commonwealth Shared Scholarship for the academic year 2023-24. The scholarship is a testament to her exceptional commitment and dedication to the field of English Language Teaching (ELT). She is one of only 24 recipients of this scholarship from Bangladesh.
All 24 selected Commonwealth Scholars from Bangladesh were invited for a pre-departure briefing hosted by the British Council on Monday, 28 August at the British High Commissioner’s residence. Her Excellency High Commissioner Sarah Cooke congratulated the scholars on their remarkable achievement.
The Commonwealth Shared Scholarship selection process holds immense significance as it identifies and supports exceptional individuals who demonstrate a strong commitment to education and development. This prestigious scholarship not only acknowledges academic excellence but also recognizes candidates who have the potential to contribute significantly to their home countries and the global community through their studies and future endeavours.
The scholarship will enable Ms. Afrin to pursue a Master's degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) at the University of Leeds, ranked 75th in the QS World University Rankings 2024, and stands as a globally recognized institution of academic excellence.
Ms. Afrin's achievement not only reflects her commitment to academic excellence but also mirrors Brac University's commitment to fostering exceptional educators who can make a lasting impact on the field of English Language Teaching. We believe that her experience, combined with the advanced teaching methods acquired through the course of study, will catalyze the enhancement of high-quality education at the university.
