August was a busy and exciting month for the Department of English and Humanities. As the list below shows, 16 postgraduate and 13 undergraduate students of Literature and Linguistics have successfully defended their thesis, completing their respective academic programmes. Six students of Media and Cultural Studies stream presented their internship reports to attain their BA degree. The thesis and report viva examinations took place on August 11th, 13th, 14th and 17th at the department.

August was a significant month for the department’s academic research output. Professor Firdous Azim, the chairperson of the department, inaugurated Central Women’s University’s Colloquium Series event on August 11, 2016, where she gave a lecture on “Women and Literature” concentrating on the writings of Virginia Woolf and Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain.
Internationally, Professor Azim spent August 22-25 in New Delhi, India to attend the publication of the book, Feminist Subversion and Complicity: Governmentalities and Gender Knowledge in South Asia, ed. by Maitrayee Mukhopadhyay, which includes her chapter titled, “Secularism and the Women’s Movement in Bangladesh”. The book was launched by Zubaan Publishers on August 23rd at the Indian Habitat Centre, New Delhi. The contributors along with the editor and publishers of the book were present there. Dr. Rajni Palriwala, Professor of Sociology, Delhi University, presided over the session. On the same day, Professor Azim also presented a paper based on her chapter in the book at the Department of Women and Gender Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University. On August 24th, Ambedkar University, New Delhi organised another panel discussion around the book, where Professor Azim was a discussant.
August ended in preparation to begin another new semester, Fall 2016, started on September 4, 2016.
