Three students of MS in biotechnology program defended their research work on 8 June 2017. Dr. Umama Khan and Ms. Sadia Afsana worked on public health issues at MNS Dept. labs, while Ms. Banjir Sultana worked on bioremediation at BCSIR lab. Title of Dr. Umama khan’s thesis was “Behaviour of gut bacteria upon stress in infants with ileostomy due to Hirschsprung disease”. Sadia Afsana carried out a study of molecular characterisation and her thesis title was “Prevalence and molecular characterization of extended spectrum beta-lactamase producing multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates”. Both these work were jointly supervised by Professor C. R. Ahsan, Department of Microbiology, University of Dhaka and Professor Mahboob Hossain of the MNS Department. Ms. Banjir Sultana carried out a research under joint supervision of Professor Naiyyum Choudhury, Chairman, BAERA and Dr. Monzur Morshed Ahmed, Senior Scientific Officer, BCSIR. Her thesis title was “Degradation of dyes used in textile industries by bacteria isolated from local textile effluents”. The examination committee was headed by Prof. A. A. Ziauddin Ahmad, Chairperson, MNS Department. Professor Naiyyum Choudhury and Dr. Aparna Islam were also present in the Evaluation Committee. The committee expressed satisfaction on the quality of the work done in these research study and Chair emphasized on publishing the results of these research in journals of repute for dissemination of these knowledge.
