BRAC University Pharma Society (BUPS), the students' organisation designated for the Department of pharmacy, BRAC University, organized an awareness campaign on HIV/AIDS on World AIDS day December 1, 2011, in association from International Pharmaceutical Students Federation (IPSF), Department of Pharmacy, BRAC University and James P Grant School of Public Health, BRAC University. The campaign was started by formation of a Human Red Ribbon at BRAC university Premises followed by a rally/procession on HIV/AIDS awareness throughout the Mohakhali and Gulshan Area of Dhaka City.
Then Seminar session was lunched at Banquet Hall, Hotel Abakash, Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation, Mohakhali, Dhaka. Professor Dr. Nazrul Islam, Former Vice-Chancellor & Former Chairman, Department of Virology, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Medical University, and the pioneer of HIV/AIDS research in Bangladesh was present as the chief guest in the seminar. Dr. Anwar Hossain Munshi, Director, Modern Health Group and an activist on HIV/AIDS awareness was also present as special guest. Other guest for the campaign seminar includes Dr. Sabina Faiz Rashid, Dr. Malabika Sarker from James P Grant School of Public Health, Professor Dr. Mofiz Uddin Ahmed from the Department of Mathematics, BRAC University. Around 200 students from 15 different universities, colleges and other educational institution of the Dhaka city took part in this campaign and seminar.
After the scientific talks quiz competition on HIV/AIDS, Poster exhibition and poster competition on HIV/AIDS were also done to celebrate the AIDS day. The welcome speech in the seminar session was delivered by Mrs. Shahana Sharmin, Co- Advisor of BRAC University Pharma Society. The seminar session included different documentaries on HIV/AIDS, global scenario, Bangladesh context, Social stigma on HIV/AIDS positive patient, HIV/AIDS awareness, Method of diagnosis and prevention of HIV/AIDS. After the seminar session, quiz competition involving the participating institutions took place on HIV/AIDS. About 15 teams each comprising of 3 members took place in the competition. In the meanwhile, an adjudication of the posters submitted took place. Southeast University win the champion trophy in Quiz competition and Department of Bio-Technology, Dhaka University secured 1 runner up and 2 Runner up was Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology. Dhaka Imperial College garbed the best poster award. The vote of thanks was given by the chairperson of the Department of Pharmacy, BRAC University and the Advisor, BRAC University Pharma Society, Professor Dr. Ashik Mosaddik. The whole program was financially supported by Square Pharmaceutical Limited, BRAC Health Program and the student affairs of BRAC University.
