Another article review session was held at BRAC University Savar Campus, where Md. Mostafizur Rahman, faculty member of Ethics and Culture, presented an article titled “Political and economic power and media ethics” by Aidan White.
The article focuses on recent phenomenon of gradual shifting of media, social media and journalists from the prime focus of journalism. The author tries to address the issue that internet users often gain access to free online services in exchange of different kinds of personal data, such as email ID, favorite item etc. He also explains how the World Wide Web (www) has become a whirlpool of hate-speech and racism. Then, the author also mentions how the media recently focuses more on gaining fame and profit, which is why the journalists and media often overlook the main focus of media: to share the truth. The author indicates that rather than focusing on rational and truthful information, media nowadays focuses more on emotion of the readers to acquire fame for their organization. Regarding this he further says, “facts become less important than statements that trigger emotional responses.”Finally, the author concludes by re-emphasizing on the importance of factual, accurate and neutral reporting in journalism. He also discourages the use of lies and slander to instigate hostility and violence.
Faculty members were encouraged to share their views on the topic at the end of the session.
