On 6 February 2020, Professor Shahidur Rahman of the Department of Economics and Social Sciences, BracU, delivered a guest lecturer (Online) to TUFTS University, Fletcher School master’s student course in “Cross-Sector Partnerships”. The lecture was arranged by the course Professor, Dr. Jette Steen Knudsen.
Professor Shahidur presented his experience on governance of occupational health and safety (OHS) initiatives in Bangladesh Readymade Garment sector in the aftermath of the Rana Plaza tragedy. The discussion with the students led to exchange of information on the legally binding safety precautions and other independent initiatives of the government, factory owners and NGOs.
The students got an opportunity to learn about the necessity of cross-sectoral collaborations, their benefits and limitations. Professor Shahidur and Dr. Jette are currently involved in an ongoing multi-stakeholder initiative, Regulation of International Supply Chains (RISC), a DANIDA funded project being jointly implemented by BracU, Copenhagen Business School, Tufts University and The Ethical Trading Initiative, Copenhagen.
