Though most people seek to tackle the effects of climate change, it is politics, power and money that are accelerating it, said an ecologist of York University, Canada on Thursday, 15 February 2018.
Dawn Bazely, a professor at the Department of Biology and a visiting researcher in Oxford University’s Biodiversity Institute, also added that even extremism had emerged as a long term effect of climate change.
She was addressing a seminar organised by the Department of English and Humanities (ENH) of BRAC University (BRACU) at BRACU’s Mohakhali auditorium focusing on environmental changes and challenges in the modern age.
Bazely gave a presentation on arctic plants which grew on top of mountains and how seasons changed its growth patterns. Using the example of the arctic region, she said seasonal changes were affecting reproductive strategies and threatening food security.
The issues of the Sundarbans and the Rampal power plant also came up for discussions during the event titled “Challenges of Environmental Changes and Crises”.
Bazely presented a foldscope to ENH Chairperson Professor Firdous Azim while Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Ansar Ahmed other faculty members and students were present at the seminar.
